Miden has introduced a novel blockchain architecture that redefines how transactions are executed and validated across its network. Validators verify cryptographic proofs rather than reprocessing transactions, reducing the computation required per transaction and enabling more efficient scaling.
This shift, however, introduces a new technical consideration — not for validators, but for users.
The Proof Generation Challenge at the Edge
Zero-knowledge proof generation is computationally intensive. While executing a transaction on a smartphone is typically fast, generating a proof for that execution can be orders of magnitude more demanding. On modern but resource-constrained devices, this can result in transaction finality times stretching to tens of seconds. On lower-end smartphones, successful proof generation may be unreliable or even impossible.
Such constraints are incompatible with the user experience expectations of mainstream applications. For Miden to deliver both its architectural vision and a smooth, responsive UX, proof generation must, in some cases, be offloaded from low-resource edge devices to specialized infrastructure.
To address this challenge, Miden adopts a delegated proof-generation model. Users still execute transactions locally, preserving the core principles of edge execution and trust minimization. The computationally heavy task of proof generation, however, is handled by a remote system built specifically for this purpose — a fleet of high-performance machines optimized for zero-knowledge proving. How the system works:
1. Continuous, real-time monitoring: A dedicated monitoring layer tracks load across every prover in production.
2. Reaching load threshold: Once resource usage reaches the system’s defined threshold, scaling is initiated automatically.
3. Automatic provisioning: A new prover instance is automatically deployed, configured, and added to the cluster.
During this short provisioning window, proof times may temporarily (for 2-3 min) increase from <1s to around 5s, but the system never becomes congested or blocked.
4. Automatic down-scaling: When the system determines that removing one prover would still keep all others under the defined threshold, an instance is safely decommissioned.
